| About Producers Cooperative Oil Mill |
History
Producers Cooperative Oil Mill (PCOM) was established on June 20, 1944 when the vision of fourteen cooperative gins and three regional cooperatives became a reality through the purchase of Terminal Oil Mill in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The original investors deserve a lot of credit for their vision and courage.
Producers Cooperative has now completed over 61 years of successful operations in the cottonseed processing industry. Loyalty and support from member gins has made this success possible.
Over the past 61 years the cotton industry has seen many changes including farming practices, seed varieties, and technology improvements such as round up ready and boll guard cotton seeds. Cotton production today is much less labor intensive than in years past. We no longer have to hoe weeds out of cotton fields or hand pick cotton at harvest. Thanks to efforts like the boll weevil eradication program, we no longer lose much of cotton production to boll weevils or boll worms.
Today mechanical cotton pickers or strippers can harvest 80 to 150 bales of cotton per day. Harvested cotton is placed into a module builder forming modules containing 12 to 20 bales of cotton which can be transported to a cotton gin at a later date. After ginning, the cottonseed is either transported to a cottonseed oil mill or stored for future sale into the feed market. Producers Cooperative Oil Mill has storage for 125,000 tons of whole cottonseed; in 1945, Producers Cooperative Oil Mill processed about 150 tons of whole cottonseed per day. Due to expansion and advances in technology, PCOM can now process as much as 1000 tons of whole cotton seed daily.
The ability to crush more seed required more cottonseed than was being supplied by Oklahoma, Texas, and Kansas members, so in 1999 PCOM purchased Osceola Products Company. Through this purchase, locations in Osceola, Arkansas; and Kennett, Missouri were acquired with storage capacity for about 200,000 tons of whole cottonseed. In the year 2000, PCOM bought land at Covington, Tennessee and has built 60,000 tons of cottonseed storage at that location. The acquisition of these facilities resulted in the formation of Producers Mid-South Company (PMSC), a wholly owned subsidiary of Producers Cooperative Oil Mill. Locations at PMSC are used for cottonseed acquisitions and storage only. Cottonseed from these facilities needed to supplement the crush in Oklahoma City is transported there and additional seed is sold into the whole seed market.
Currently serving member gins in Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, Arkansas, Missouri and Tennessee; Producers Cooperative Oil Mill and Producers Mid-South Company are respected industry leaders. With the support of our members, we will continue to grow and serve our membership for many years to come.
